Q. How can I support a 7-year-old child who is rude not only to me but to the other children in the group? This child calls his peers, ugly, fat, poopy pants and knucklehead; he does this when he is being playful and when he gets angry. When I ask him to tidy up, he often says, “no way poopy pants,” and then he laughs and runs away. When I’m serving snack, he will say, “you are a poopy pants,” which gets all the children laughing. I’m feeling frustrated and I’m not sure what to do.

Who’s That?

This is a game using real photos of staff with and without their masks. During the pandemic, the children faced many changes on a daily basis as everyone around them was wearing masks. Child porters would escort the children in and out of the building as parents were not allowed in. So many faces…some new, some familiar but all of them hidden behind a mask. I wanted the children to be comfortable with the many changes that were happening due to Covid.

The book, Sulky, Rowdy, Rude? is primarily written for parents, using the lens of the Low Arousal Approach. It flows easily using common language instead of scientific terms. Each chapter begins with a scenario between a child and parent, followed by an analysis of what went wrong and how it can be improved. The book is divided into 3 parts. The first part goes through 13 principles that are necessary to understand what the Low Arousal Approach is. Part 2 describes case scenarios with action plans. Part 3 gives extra study material.
