Just Give Him the Whale
by Paula Kluth
One of the most common ways to get to know a person is to exchange information about interests. It develops relationships and most of all friendships. Children are often eager to share what they know and some of them are experts in one interest, which we label “special interest or obsession”. It can often be consuming and teachers wonder what to do. Paula Kluth refers to these interests as “fascinations” which encourages us to think in a new way about how to teach and motivate children with autism.
This guide book offers stories based on the author’s experiences in the classroom and shares easy tips and strategies for teachers to implement “fascinations” as positive teaching tools that calm, motivate and support learning new skills.
I truly appreciated reading Paula’s guidebook. I have gained new insights on how to make the most of fascinations to help children with autism thrive.
